When using a PC you may have to re-start your machine  in safe mode to get you out of a fix or run maintenance tasks, here’s how…

  • On Windows 95 

Restart your computer. Press F8 at the Starting Windows 95 message. Choose Safe Mode from the Windows 95 Startup Menu then press Enter. 

  • On Windows 98 and ME 

Restart your computer. Tap repeatedly the F8 key after the Computer startup test screen (POST) is done. or Press the CTRL key until the startup menu appears. Choose the Safe Mode option then press Enter. 

  • On Windows NT (VGA mode) 

Click Start>Settings>Control Panel. Double-click the System icon. Click the Startup/Shutdown tab. Set the Show List field to 10 seconds and click OK to save this change. Shut down and restart your computer. Select VGA mode from the startup menu. 

  • On Windows 2000 

Restart your computer. Tap repeatedly the F8 key when you see the Starting Windows bar at the bottom of the screen. Choose the Safe Mode option from the Menu then press Enter. 

  • On Windows XP 

Restart your computer. Tap repeatedly the F8 key after the Computer startup test screen (POST) is done. Choose the Safe Mode option from the Menu then press Enter.

    On some Asus mobos, pressing F8 on reboot firstly the ASUS BIOS pops up a selection menu from which you can manually pick the device you wish to boot. This appears to override or skip any settings you might have in the BIOS Boot Setup Menu. After choosing the appropriate device - HD, CD or Floppy, you must continue to press F8 until the startup screen allows you to choose Safe Mode
